I'd like to share with you, some notes from Portuguese wines, made by food paring expert, Mr Laurent Chaniac. This event took place at "Terreiro do Paço" restaurant in Lisbon ( http://www.terreiropaco.com/eng/index_eng2.html ), last year, i hope it content might help to drive tasty pairings. 2007, PV, DouroNose: Closed nose, not very expressive, subtle on ripe but light aromatics. Palate: Very light rounded fruits, light acidity, light structure. Finish: Juicy with tropical notes, short. Light green color notes. 2005, Gouvyas reserve Bago de Touriga Gold colour. Nose: Citrus, honey butter and brioche. Vibrant an expressive nose. Palate: Subtle oak (French like), followed by elegant citrus on minerals. Finish: Good citrus on the ripe side with delicate minerals and peach on finish. Oak is very well integrated in the ripe citrus and minerals. Stunning wine, complex.
2005 Bolonhês, Monte Seis Reis, Estremoz Ruby colour. Nose: Fresh fragrant fruits with dry tannins. Palate: Juicy berries with good minerality. Finish: Juicy and mineral, short.
2004 Syrah Monte Seis Reis, Estremoz, Alentejo Very dark colour. Nose: Spicy pepper, lightly gamy on brewesed apples. Palate: Ripe dark berries with liquorice notes, juicy mid palette with oak. Finish: Medium with spices.
2005 Callabriga, Alentejo Very dark colour. Nose: Very ripe cherries with new oak. Palate: Ripe dark berries attack with very soft acidity, light oak. Finish: Juicy, medium short. Fruit driven wine with concentration.
2004 Callabriga, Alentejo, Reserva Very very dark colour, opaque. Nose: Ripe tannins on ripe dark fruits. Palate: Juicy, silky tannins on minerals, dark ripe juicy fruits with oaks. Finish: Minerals finish with concentrated dark fruits and soft oak. Very extracted wine that will age. Very concentrated wine wrapped in oak that will integrate in the next years.
2007 Monte Da Ravos Queira, Alentejo Ruby colour. Nose: fresh with light berries with tabbaco and spices. Palate: Lightly savoury attak, juicy bombon Anglais. Finish: Juicy short finish.
2004 Vinhas da Ira, Alentejo Drak ruby colour. Nose: Juicy berry and plums with soft touch of oak. Palate: Juicy blueberries, soft integrated tannins, light spices with soft oak. Finish: Persistent and elegant. Complex and elegant wine, great to drink now.
2004 Uvas Castas, Red Table wine Dark ruby colour. Nose: dark berries with a light reduction. Palate: Juicy blackberries with a good balance of minerals, gentle tannin, elegant structure. Finish: Juicy fruits on soft minerals and elegant tannins. Ready to drink now.
2005 Perequita Reserva, JMF Very dark ruby colour. Nose: Ripe dark cherries, blackberries, tobacco, hint liquorice and floral touches, Very complex ripe fruits with cedar touches. Palate: ripe but juicy attack with soft spices and integrated new oak flavours. Finish: Powerful but elegant on ripe juicy dark cherry and new oak. Complex for ageing, oak needs to integrate the fruits and minerals.
2004 FSF, Terras do Sado, Premium Reserva Very dark colour. Nose: Lightly reductive with spicy dark fruits with floral notes. Palate: Ripe and juicy attack with big black spicy fruits. Finish: Spicy finish on juicy fruits, light cedar. Concentrated and complex for ageing, reduction is pleasant and will develop a gamy and animal character at maturity.
2006 Tinto da Anfora, Alentejo Ruby towards purple. Nose: Upfront floral violet with spicy currants. Palate: Very juicy plums with delicate spices. Finish: Floral and currant finish. Medium bodied, elegant with complexity.
2005 Preta, Fita Preta, Alentejo Bright ruby with purple notes. Nose: Very concentrated black fruits, spicy round tannin, floral notes of violets. Palate: Soft silky tannin, hint juicy currants, elegant minerals, complex violets on currants. Finish: Juicy spicy comples, persistant, elegant.
2005 Callabriga, Dão Drak ruby. Nose: Upfront juicy violets and currants. Palate: Floral violets on blackberry. Good mineral and weight. Finish: Juicy, spicy, good finish.
2004 Callabriga Reserva Deep ruby colour. Nose: Ripe tannins, currant and floral. Palate: Mineral, juicy attack, integrated tannins, violets and currant. Finish: Juicy, light mineral Medium plus.
2005 Callabriga Douro Nose: Ripe floral, currants and bonbons Anglais. Palate: Juicy attack of blueberries and black cherries with florals notes. Finish: Juicy, medium.
2002 VT Douro Deep ruby colour. Nose: tannins with light vegetal notes. Ripe berries with firm tannins. Palate: Juicy elegant, spicy tannins, currants and floral. Finish: Good finish on juicy berries and firm tannins, floral notes.
